March Featured Athlete- Kathryn Logan

Kathryn Logan

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I grew up in Saskatchewan, initially in a forestry camp and then a grain farm, but later in a small town. My four younger siblings and I kept my parents busy with lots of sports, music and school activities. Since high school, I’ve lived in Kingston and Ottawa ON, and I’ve been in Victoria BC for the last five years. I love the West Coast lifestyle!

What motivates you to stay healthy?

I want to feel my best, and I do so when I am taking good care of myself (not just working out, but also getting good sleep, eating healthy foods, managing stress). I’m far from perfect in these efforts, but I do my best to take care of my body for all of the things it does for me!

What is your occupation? What inspired you to pick this profession?

I’m a Logistics Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. I joined the military right out of high school, wanting a challenge and to see the world, and it has definitely delivered! Highlights of the last 19 years have been my overseas deployments (Afghanistan, Arabian Sea, Libya), and the friends I have made along the way.

What is something that you have done recently to help others?

I’m really excited to have recently become connected with True Patriot Love (TPL), a charity that helps ill and injured veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members. I am going to be part of an all-woman expedition to Baffin Island this spring to help raise funds for veteran mental health and transition services. We will be snowshoeing and hiking over 100 km across the Arctic Circle – truly a trip of a lifetime! TPL does amazing work for past and current military members, and I feel very privileged to be a part of this adventure. More details and a link to sponsor my efforts are here: Any help you give would mean a lot to me and thousands of military families across Canada. PS you get a tax receipt for any donations!

Can you tell us a little bit about your athletic background?

I grew up playing basketball, soccer, volleyball, and whatever other sport was “in season” through the school year. I played CIS basketball in university (possibly as the smallest small forward in history), and later got into Triathlons, and even did a couple Ironman distance tris. In the past few years, I have focused more on Crossfit and general weightlifting, as I really enjoy the variety and the friends I have made within the Crossfit community. I also have incorporated toddler-chasing into my fitness routine, as being a mom of a busy two-year-old (yogurt clean-up duty included) is an intense workout to maintain this #mombod

What would you say to someone who is trying to start living a healthier lifestyle?

Every little bit helps! Even small changes to your routine add up and can make a big difference in the long run.

What do you think the world needs most at this time in history?

Empathy. I believe everyone can grow by considering someone else’s perspective.

Do you set goals? Will you share those goals with us?

I do set goals! My current goal is to raise $7.5K for my TPL expedition!

What is your favourite Fit Balm product, and why?

I love the Coconut Lime Body Butter! Smells like a tropical beach!

Favourite… if you can list just one!

Podcast Channel: Serial for sure. I’m currently listening to 1995, and also really enjoying that.

Quote: People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane resonate with our own innermost being and reality so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” ― Joseph Campbell
