Alexandra Strickland- Westshore Boxing Gym

What motivates you to stay healthy?

My 7 year old daughter. I want to set a good example and also stay around for her as long as possible

What is your occupation? What inspired you to pick this profession?

I own a Boxing gym here in the Westshore called Westshore Boxing Gym. I started this gym in April 2016. Before I opened I competed in boxing at a high level for 5 years and when I retired I wanted to keep my love and passion for the sport alive. I also couldn't fathom doing something I hated everyday so that is how my gym was born.

What is something that you have done recently to help others?

I feel I help people daily just in my profession. I help them with their goals, I help them feel more empowered and confident and I help them get away for an hour from their hectic lives.

Can you tell us a little bit about your athletic background/what sports or type of fitness you do?

I did competitive gymnastics when I was younger until I was 16 then at 19 I started boxing. I also loved track and field in high school!

Do you have a life-changing experience related to your athletic background/experience that shaped your future self or future direction?

Very cliché to say but... boxing changed my life and led me to where I am today. An entrepreneur, loving doing what I do every day and it brought me here to Victoria. (I came from Toronto 5 yrs ago)

What would you say to someone who is trying to start living a healthier lifestyle?

It’s not easy... it’s not supposed to be but, that's what makes it worth it. After a bit it becomes easier and just a part of your lifestyle and it comes to a point where it doesn't feel like a chore, it becomes automatic. But most people quit just before they reach that point.

What do you think the world needs most at this time in history?

COMPASSION.

Do you set goals? Will you share those goals with us?

I set mini goals all the time... some examples are...

Learn a new song on the piano

Drink 1 cup of coffee a day instead of 3

How many burpees can I do in 5 min?

....

Favourite… if you can list just one!
