Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m a 30-year-old single woman working for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources who loves exercising and being outside. I feel very blessed to have a good support system around me and to live on this beautiful island.
What inspired you to start your hiking/exploring mission?
I started hiking as a kid, my mom has always been an avid hiker and got us out with her as much as possible. Lately because of injuries I’ve had to stop doing CrossFit and hiking was the only alternative that didn’t hurt my body. I decided to do my 50 in 50 challenge (which is exploring 50 new places in 50 weeks) this year because I’ve lived on the island my whole life and found that there are lots of places I had never been. So to break out of habits of going to the same places over and over I came up with this challenge for myself. So far I’m at 20 new places and it’s only April!
What do you love about being outside!?
I’ve always loved being outdoors, there’s something about fresh air and sunshine that resets my mind and kicks all the negativity away.
What advice would you give to someone looking to live a more active lifestyle?
I would say to start slow, it’s not a race. Start with things that make you happy not with what you think is going to be the best workout. I find that if I’m doing something that I enjoy that it keeps me coming back for me.
What are your top 3 places you have been so far?
This year I would have to say, Sheringham Lighthouse, Kinghorn Cabin, and Kinsol Trestle. I highly recommend checking these out!
What are some of your favourite ways to stay healthy?
Hiking is number one for me. I hike 2-3 times a week and love every minute of it. But I also stay healthy by connecting with friends and family, they help me keep a healthy mindset.
What do you think this world needs most at this time in history?
To save our precious forests, without them we are screwed.
Book: I can’t narrow it down, I have so many so I’ll tell you the most recent one I read was Wild. I’ve read it three times now and resonate so much with it.
Podcast: S-Town, I’ve listened to this half a dozen times
Exercise: Box jumps and Wall balls.
